What the label says, and what we call it
The front label prints AUSTRALIAN RUM / FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND / PLATINUM / CRAFTED WITH SUGAR CANE / CANE, REEF, RAINFOREST. It carries no age statement and it does not print the words cane spirit.
This site calls it a cane spirit, because that is how Mt Uncle sells it, and because Platinum Cane Spirit is the name it was entered and awarded under at the World Rum Awards. Where the packaging and the seller disagree on a category word, we follow the seller and the competition entry, and we say so here rather than quietly picking one. No photograph on this page is presented as the current packshot: the product plate is typographic until a current bottle photograph is supplied.
Why it exists
Platinum is the unaged pole of the range: the spirit as it comes off the still, before oak has a say. It is on the shelf so the cane can be read on its own, and so the aged releases can be read against it.
Tasting
- Nose
- Cut cane, green banana leaf, white flowers, a mineral edge underneath.
- Palate
- Sweet cane up front, then dry. Grassy rather than sugary, with pot still weight behind it.
- Finish
- Clean and short. Pepper and cane, no oak to carry it.
- Serve
- Cold, in a highball with soda and lime. Neat at room temperature if you want to read the raw material.

Provenance
Platinum is drawn straight off the still, so there is no cask record behind it. The syrup batch and distillation date are what the register holds.

Nothing to hide behind
Platinum is the spirit as it comes off the still, no cask, no colour, no time. What you taste is the cane, the ferment and where the cuts were made.
